I don't really have time to be scouting around for Hanoi food news.
Thankfully some of it finds me. Rubber-necking on the motorbike, while dangerous, can elicit knowledge about what's going on in the capital's foodscape. Via a weird kind of osmosis, I find things out. Or people send me emails.
Thursdays are looking good this month.
This coming one (12/5) presents an opportunity for lapsed home cooks to get a bit of re-schooling in the basics. Or for clueless cooks to get a good first lesson, to add a dish to their sad repertoires. Me old mates at the Hanoi Cooking Centre are capitalising on the popularity of their regular Sunday roasts by sharing some of their secrets. A "hands-on cooking class" dealing with chooks and lambs and the vegie accompaniments, tips about gravy, too, I'm sure, requires bookings in advance. Check out the deal on the HCC website.
For the remaining Thursdays in May, the drinks arm of Highway4, the House of Son Tinh - newly established in Xuan Du out at West Lake - will be practically tipping their special cocktails down your throat for nothing. A new happy hour (from 5-11pm) has been instituted, whereby first Son Tinh cocktail of the night is in your system for the grand total of 1000VND (US5c, AU6c) and each round thereafter is buy one, get one free. I'd be calling it ecstatic hour.
Over and out!
