Especially Bread Beef Steak

Oh, how I love menu translations in Hanoi.

Piled into the Bao Lam Beef Steak restaurant the other morning for a pick me up after sinking tinnies of Halida till after midnight the night before and wondered in awe at some of the delicacies awaiting. The plastic covered slap down menu was a masterpiece. If I were feeling experimental, I could have gone for the ‘popcorn soup’ to start, followed by the ‘American corns fried in butter’ as an appetiser and the remarkably titled ‘swinging beef’ as my main. Abstract, crazy images abounded. The bevies list included the delightfully oxymoronic ‘batter vitamin drink’, perhaps a dead cert hangover cure?

Enough of the giggly speculation and let’s order what we came here for; the signature dish – obviously named by some obscure Ye Olde English sonneteer – the ‘Especially Bread Beef Steak.’It comprises a big old banh my (bread roll), a couple of centimetre thick slices of steak smothered with garlic and swimming in oily gravy, as well as half a dozen crinkle cut chips. A shallow bowl of cucumber, tomato, bean shoot and lettuce salad looks positively saintly on the side.

While most of my fellow diners like to stab and splay with cutlery, I drip the excess oil off the steak and bang everything in the banh my for a super size me steak sanger. Ten minutes of munching and the seedy head is a distant memory. For a harsher hangover, order a 5000VND bia tuoi (fresh draught beer) to wash it down with.

This bonanza is available at many fine Bit Tet (beef steak) establishments in town. We have it at:

I'm still tuning in regularly, just being a lurker though! My favourite bittet (actually I've only been to 1 other because I like this one) is on Hoa Ma St. Big beef shed with lethally slippery floor - can't miss it.
